BCCM training on preservation of micro-organisms: a practical approach

Preservation of biological material is of primary interest for research in both non-profit and profit sectors and holds the primary key for many industrial applications. The mission of the BCCM consortium is not only to preserve, but also to offer quality controlled characterised and well documented biological material. Besides the acquisition and distribution of the strains, BCCM offers its expertise through services and partnership projects.

The BCCM consortium developed a specialised training which focuses on the preservation of micro-organisms. This course will be presented by our well experienced  staff members and is addressed to students as well as scientists and technicians from various fields of work including but not limited to: education, industry, health services, etc. who aim to develop their skills in micro-organism handling in general and preservation techniques in particular.

Bacteria Collection (BCCM/LMG)

Training programme in preservation and characterisation of bacteria

Our scientists and technicians have a wealth of experience in the preservation and characterisation of bacteria, and are committed to passing on that knowledge. BCCM/LMG will follow up on its successful participation in the Training and Outreach Programme of the past EU-FP7 EMbaRC project ( by organising a training programme once a year. This programme will combine interactive oral lectures with hands-on sessions during which participants can benefit from expert advice, advanced equipment and access to taxonomic databases.

Depending on the personal interests and research needs of the applying participants, one or both of the two themes below can be included in the training programme.

Bacterial collection management

  • Acquisition and distribution of bacterial cultures: legal aspects and standard practices
  • Quality control of bacteriological material
  • Long-time preservation of bacterial cultures through lyophilisation

Taxonomy, identification and typing of bacteria

  • General principles of bacterial taxonomy
  • State-of-the-art overview of methods for bacterial identification and typing
  • Processing and interpretation of taxonomic data (e.g. DNA sequences, DNA fingerprints, MALDI-TOF MS spectra, FAME profiles, DNA-DNA hybridisation data)
  • Case study: identification and/or typing of a limited number of isolates brought by the participants (after mutual agreement on the study outline with BCCM/LMG)

Fungi collection: Human & Animal Health (BCCM/IHEM)

Training: Moulds in the indoor environment and outdoor air

This 5-day course introduces you to the mycology of the human environment. Each day starts with a theoretical session, followed by practical sessions in the lab. There is a strong focus on recognizing the main genera and identifying the most important species. Each participant will observe over 80 different species, covering the largest part of the commonly encountered fungal diversity.

The following topics will be handled:

  • basic fungal biology, classification, nomenclature and morphology
  • the typical characteristics for the different genera, the characteristics that matter at the species level
  • techniques for analysing the indoor environment and the outdoor air.
  • the recent developments in fungal identification

Fungi from the veterinary practice

The workshop focusses on recognizing pathogenic species based on macroscopic and microscopic characters. We also take a look at often isolated, but non-pathogenic contaminants.

During this workshop, we provide a general introduction to mycology. The main part of the day will be spent in the laboratory: presenting the species and getting to know them by microscopy. We also provide a brief introduction to DNA and protein based techniques as they have become more important for identification. Identification of fungi using MALDI-TOF MS

This training shows how to identify yeasts and filamentous fungi using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. The following aspects will be detailed: culture, protein extraction, MALDI-TOF MS analysis, identification and databases. This workshop combines a theoretical introduction and a practical demonstration. The opportunity is also given to the participants to manipulate the samples during the procedure. Laboratory practice in mycology

This training proposes to acquire basic practical knowledge in the mycology laboratory. This 1 workshop includes notably mould and/or yeast cultures (including techniques, culture media and culture conditions), sampling procedures, spore counting and basics in microscopy. Agro-food & Environmental Fungal Collection (BCCM/MUCL)

General training in mycology can be offered under different objectives:

  • Isolation, culture and preservation methods
  • Conventional and molecular identification
  • Taxonomy

Representative strains of the major taxonomic groups of fungi have been selected for teaching purposes and are available at a reduced price (see pricelist).

The CEnter of Study on Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Monoxenics (CESAMM) and the Glomeromycota IN vitro COllection (MUCL/GINCO) have made the in vitro cultivation of AM fungi their primary research tool to study these fungi and their relationships with their host plants. Since 2005, CESAMM and GINCO organize an international training to researchers, technicians and industrials on the techniques to culture AM fungi under in vitro conditions. This training is organized each year in late May.
